Molybdenum market update on July 18, 2025
This week, the domestic molybdenum market exhibited an overall high-level but weak trend, primarily due to a significant price surge in the previous two weeks, which led to reduced inquiry and procurement enthusiasm from downstream users. Additionally, the earlier bullish factors have gradually dissipated, resulting in insufficient momentum for suppliers to further raise prices, with some quotations even experiencing slight pullbacks. Furthermore, declining steel tender prices are a key reason for molybdenum concentrate and ferromolybdenum holders to lower their shipment prices. Notably, at the beginning of the week, molybdenum concentrate prices remained firm, but by the weekend, they slightly declined due to the downward adjustment in ferromolybdenum prices.
According to statistics from CTIA GROUP LTD, this week, molybdenum concentrate price decreased by approximately 20 yuan per ton-degree, a decline of 0.50%; ferromolybdenum price decreased by about 2,000 yuan per ton, a decline of 0.78%; molybdenum oxide price decreased by about 20 yuan per ton-degree, a decline of 0.48%; sodium molybdate price increased by about 5,000 yuan per ton, a rise of 2.79%; ammonium heptamolybdate price showed no significant change; and molybdenum powder price decreased by about 5 yuan per kilogram, a decline of 1.10%.
According to data from the China Iron and Steel Association, in early July 2025, the steel inventory of key monitored steel enterprises was 15.07 million tons, decreasing by 380,000 tons from the previous ten-day period, a decline of 2.4%. Compared to the beginning of the year, it increased by 2.7 million tons, a rise of 21.9%; compared to the same period last month, it decreased by 720,000 tons, a decline of 4.6%; compared to the same period last year, it decreased by 330,000 tons, a decline of 2.1%; and compared to the same period two years ago, it decreased by 830,000 tons, a decline of 5.2%. By region, steel inventories decreased by 150,000 tons in East China, 170,000 tons in Northwest China, and 270,000 tons in Central-South China, while they increased by 130,000 tons in Northeast China, 70,000 tons in North China, and 20,000 tons in Southwest China.
